My piece “Crop circle” reflects the human use of nature as an inspiration and a tool for creation. People using basic equipment to stamp out patterns in the landscapes that surround their daily lives. Crop circles are often cited as extraterrestrial intervention. A form of communication from beyond the stars, however the main* accepted reality is that of humans creating these patterns in the landscape. Bringing awe, worry and sometimes annoyance to those in the local communities. Seeing the nature surrounding them as a canvas of sorts. In which to be utilised for expression. The inspiration for the imagery of is piece was from a newspaper article dating back to 1678, titled “The mowing devil”. The article being cited as an early report of a crop circle occurrence. Already stooping these patterns in the mystic and that of the beyond. Featuring a sketch of a demon like creature scything a pattern in the field. The figure in my piece is that of an almost human silhouette, etching the landscape under the cover of night.

*main; since we cannot be sure of every occasion of crop circles being the work of a terrestrial being.
